June 28th, 2024 – 7pm – at First Parish Truro: “Faithfully Queer: Celebrating Our Queer Saints”
Queer people have been present throughout history, in every age and place, as part of God’s diverse and wondrous human creation. So many Christian churches have done damage to those in the LGBTQIA+ community across the ages and still today. They denigrate these beloved people by peddling an exclusive version of God that bears little resemblance to the always-welcoming, always-affirming ministry and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Unlike them, First Parish Truro is an open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ, which means that our welcome extends to all our queer members, friends, and visitors – if you’re “family,” you’re our family, too!
This year we will celebrate Pride both in our Sunday morning worship on June 16th (10am at First Parish, with Rev. Anna preaching) and with a special Friday Evening Candlelight Service at 7pm on June 28th. The Candlelight service will be led by our new Community Minister, Pastor Claudia Alvarez, and it will be an opportunity for us to reflect upon, celebrate, and lift up the names of all those queer people we have known as saints – both historically and those who have been our own friends, family, spouses, partners, lovers, and chosen family. Come to light a candle and hear a few inspirational words of comfort and celebration. We are grateful to God for the gift of queerness!
